Musician’s Workshop

Offered by fiddle phenomenon Phil Salazar on Sunday, June 23rd from 1:00PM – 2:00PM. This will be an excellent workshop for beginners to slow jam – designed for fiddle, guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo. Two “Old Time Songs” will be picked ahead of time so people can become familiar with them before they come to the workshop.

Members need to sign up at the two prior Fiddler meetings (May 26 or June 9) and indicate a couple of songs they would like to learn. Phil will select two songs to learn from the list, and Joe Johnson will notify attendees in advance which songs were selected.

We will not be holding the regularly scheduled Sunday jam session on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12, 2013.

The Old Time Fiddlers will resume its regularly scheduled meetings on Sunday, May 26, 2013.

Second Fiddlers Voice Workshop

The Old Time Fiddlers will be hosting another voice workshop on Sunday February 24 from 12:30-1:30 given by Smitty West and Julija Zonic.

The workshop is designed for singers or anyone who wants to learn how to strengthen their voice.

Smitty West and Julija Zonic are known in Ojai and around the world for their beautiful paired vocal harmonies and individual performances of original and cover songs from some of the great singer/songwriters.

In addition to performing, Julija, who hails originally from Croatia, is a music educator, as well as a choral director and private voice teacher. Smitty is an award-winning singer/songwriter and pianist, and is the founder of Ojai Songwriters Anonymous, a collaborative support group of songwriters. Together, Smitty and Julija work with youth and seniors in the Ojai Valley, bringing the joy of singing to various groups, including “Rockin’ It Old School,” a senior chorus sponsored by the City of Ojai, Rotary Club of Ojai, and the OYES Theater. Smitty and Julija have been performing together since 2007.

Following the workshop join us for old time fiddle and bluegrass music. Feel free to bring an instrument or your voice to join in. Admission and parking are free and refreshments are available. Oak View Community Center, 18 Valley Road, Oak View.

The Old Time Fiddlers will be hosting a voice workshop on February 10 from 12:30-1:30 given by Smitty West and Julija Zonic.

The workshop is designed for singers or anyone who wants to learn how to strengthen their voice.

Besides performance, Julija is a music educator…as well as a choral director and private voice teacher. Julija (pronounced YOO-lee-yah, but she also answers to Julia) is a native Croatian, and has been singing professionally since she was a little girl. Smitty is a award-winning singer/songwriter and pianist. They have been performing together since 2007. Fiddlers Workshop

On January 13, Ron Sexton will be hosting the second in a series of workshops designed to provide musicians with information needed to increase knowledge and performance of their music. The upcoming workshop will be a continuation of the previous workshop, Music 101, and will include arrangements, chordal structure, the importance of scales, and….hands on teaching of one or two songs that can be performed on stage that day or at a later meeting. Workshop start time is 12:15, January 13, 2013, and will be held at the Fiddlers regular meeting place, the Oak View Community Center, 18 Valley Rd., Oak View, CA 93022

Also, there will be a performance of Ron Sexton’s Avant Garde Guitar Society on Monday, Jan. 14th, 7:30 PM, at the Golden China Resturant, 760 S. Seaward Ave., Ventura. (Just off the 101 at Seaward).
