2nd Annual Fiddle Festival Reunion

If you do something right the first time, why not do it again! Last years first ever Fiddle Festival Reunion was so much fun for participants and audience alike we decided to play host to the Fiddle Festival again. With experience gained from the previous festival and blessed yet again with perfect weather, District 8 members put together a memorable event.

The festival saw a much larger crowd this year, drawn by the music that is such a big part of our cultural heritage. With 28 reunion participants and five bands, there was live music all day long. The featured bands, composed mostly of local musicians kept the crowd entertained playing a mix of traditional and original songs from bluegrass and Celtic to mariachi and contemporary folk music. A well deserved thank you to the Whiskey Chimp Band, Ashley Broder, Somis Highway, Mariachi Camarillo, and the Taradactyls for helping to make this years event an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We could not have held the festival without the dedication of staff and volunteers. Kudos to event coordinators Wayne and Cathy Agnew who organized the festival, and to all the volunteers who handled everything from registration to cleanup, with extra special thanks to Rory and Michel Franco for their tireless efforts. See you all next year!

Spring 2011 Fiddlers Campout

Despite the high winds gusting throughout much of Ventura County, the District 8 Fiddlers had their own sheltered oasis for the Campout at Kenney Grove Park in Fillmore. Blessed with plenty of warm sunshine and a light breeze, many a fine tune was played to the delight of everyone there. In addition to the overnighters, the Saturday potluck brought plenty of “day” campers out to share music, camaraderie and lots of good food. Below are photos and videos of the event – if you missed the Campout this time around, be sure to stay tuned for the next one and plan on going. You won’t be disappointed!

A note about the video quality – these were shot with a small point and shoot camera, thus aren’t likely the best quality videos you’ve ever watched. However, if you were there in person, the musicians are some of the best you’ll ever hear and the spirit of the gathering was second to none. Enjoy!

Thank You From The Harvey’s

2011 Julian Family Fiddle Camp Attendees

Now in the history books, the Julian Family Fiddle Camp exceeded all expectations. A good time was had by all attendees, and we were particularly excited for the two young fiddlers we sponsored, John and Thomas Harvey. Just prior to the camp they sent Distict 8 a very nice thank you for the generous scholarship. While we’ve yet to hear about their experience, the camp director, Avery Ellison, made a glowing writeup saying “..my personal expectations were exceeded on almost every level, i.e., from the number of people, to the caliber of teaching, the phenomenal performances given…”. Avery’s full article is here. We’re certain John and Thomas learned a lot and perhaps they’ll be back on our local stage sometime soon to showcase their new skills. Below is the thank you note we received from the Harvey’s a while back. Enjoy!
